FOSS4G 2022 in Firenze

Fléttan was proud to present at FOSS4G 2022 in Firenze, the world’s leading open-source geospatial conference, showcasing our research on remote mapping of soil erosion risk in Iceland. Our talk, part of the academic track, highlighted how we use Sentinel-2 satellite data, machine learning, and ground truth samples to develop an automated system for assessing soil erosion across Iceland’s challenging Arctic terrain.

Soil erosion is a pressing issue, accelerated by climate change and human activity, and Fléttan’s approach leverages Support Vector Machines (SVM) and high-resolution geospatial data to provide accurate, scalable assessments. This methodology achieves an impressive 94% classification accuracy, paving the way for improved land conservation strategies and better environmental monitoring.

Our participation at FOSS4G 2022 marked an important step in sharing our work with the global open-source geospatial community, receiving valuable feedback, and exploring new collaborations. As we continue to refine our methods, Fléttan remains committed to developing cutting-edge, cost-effective solutions for Arctic environmental monitoring.
